Curated/organized by J. Morrison

Printed Matter is pleased to present 24 DAYS OF MATTER PRINTED, a live screenprinting project by J. Morrison. From December 1st until the 24th, daily screenprinting sessions will feature a rotating cast of 20 artists creating collaborative works in the Printed Matter storefront. During these sessions, the artistic collaboration will be accumulative, with a new artist each day adding his or her own print to the previously produced prints. Prints will be available for purchase at any stage during this process.

Working under the theme of a "Self-Portrait,” the artists will print their creation on a variety of media - from Sweatshirts, Underwear, Handkerchiefs, and a special fine art Paper Edition of 100. They will be priced affordably, ranging from $10-$100, with the paper edition increasing as the show progresses with all of the artists' screenprints collaged together. The works created will be on exhibit at Printed Matter through mid-January.

This year’s exhibition with J. Morrison follows in a long tradition of Printed Matter's holiday events to support the institution, including past fundraisers organized by the artists' collective Collaborative Projects (or COLAB), and Giftland, curated by Max Schumann and guest curators. J. Morrison’s show title and theme are a play off the “12 Days of Christmas” and in modern commercial times the "25 Days of Christmas," giving an artist's alternative view of holiday consumerism.

In a world of “reality” shows about being a house wife, finding the perfect 27 million dollar apartment or being the next great art star one finds themselves at a crossroads.

Do we go the way of “reality” consuming an endless supply of gluttonous pleasures, blindly chasing a dangling top chef meal with the hopes of possibly gaining so much that we may someday achieve the biggest looser status?

Or do we choose a different path. A path that allows the magic of life back into our reality. A path that allows the dance of Purusha and Prakirti, Yin and Yang, to ebb and flow with organic precision. A path uninterrupted by commercial breaks that may have magic around the next corner instead of sponsorship, greed, and ego.

If one chooses the early path an endless supply of pre-planned and produced, simulated landscapes can be found. Yet if one chooses the latter the question of where to beginarises.

This question is not new but ancient. How does one navigate the path less travelled? If one looks to history for the answer one sees that inside all myth and legend the answer is the same, we find a guide. Someone who has set out on the path before us, who can now return with the lessons of his hero’s journey to help others navigate this mysterious and magic landscape. Dante had Virgil, Neo had Morpheus, and sometimes we are all blessed with the truth inside art to lead the way.

In the work of Gio Black Peter I see that truth, I see an artist reacting to the world of simulated reality by looking inward for answers. An artist asking himself within his work the hard questions in life we all come upon on our individual journeys.

With Gio’s authenticity and generosity set to paper and canvas, lyrics and video his role as guide into a new and mysterious landscape is clear.

Gio Black Peter (born Giovanni Andrade Paolo Guevara) is a New York-based performance and visual artist who examines text and subject, truth and fakery, rebellion and authority.

His subversive work has quickly earned him a name in the downtown New York scene of young emerging artists who participate in today’s dialogue about the deconstruction of high profile, white box presentation and the desire to raise art awareness. At the core of Black Peter’s thinking is the idea that the life of art depends on the viewer’s willingness to suspend his or her pre-programmed thoughts and play into the believability of magic. Truth and a masterful aesthetic draw the viewer deep into Black Peter’s art—a visceral exploration of vulnerability and self-reflection.

Since 2007, Gio Black Peter has performed and exhibited work worldwide, including: New York, Berlin, Madrid, Milan, Bergen, London, Antwerp, Tokyo, and Paris and now at BrianRiley1ProjectSpace.

Wrestle, whether voluntary on involuntary, physical or mental, positive or negative is an action. We may wrestle with the result of a past dilemma, a projected decision, or current situation but the fret (or comfort) of this quandary takes place in the moment, often finding it’s not so much the finite content we wrestle with; it’s the strategy in how we’ll respond to it. This exhibition focuses on the broad aspects of circumstance. Brian Kenny sets the pace with the immediacy of the physical and strategic points necessary in the actual sport, projecting formality and beauty. He expands on that notion with Boys Never Fail, which affirms the winning aspect of boys as champions and their unique ability to hit the bulls-eye, as champions, on many different levels. Andrej Dubravsky examines youth and fantastical identity in the arena of alter egoism where young gay men break free from restriction. Frankie Rice demonstrates his ability to transform the containment of a medical solution to a social pandemic through the use of a visual a metaphor of hope and endurance, while Elizabeth Smolarz utilizes video to relay the stages of death in a banal setting of a Laundromat, with its delivery being both stunning and mundane. These combined works may not leave us with the artists solution to the theme yet more effectively, demonstrates how they contemplate it.

Slava Mogutin is the best kind of artist – the kind who creates because he needs to, and who painstakingly develops an aesthetic to express that need. Starting out as a poet in his teenage years, he wrote beautiful, angry poems in Russian that came deep from the heart of his motherland. Later kicked out of Russia by authorities for his “exceptional cynicism” and “extreme insolence”, Mogutin ended up an exile in America and, being forced to abandon his mother tongue, switched to a purely visual art form – photography – as a creative outlet. His early photographs were more abstract, but he soon also started to experiment with portraiture and photo journalism. His work now easily and playfully vacillates between the two, but the poetry always remains. Brian Kenny, Slava’s partner in love and art, entered the picture about seven years ago. A prodigious young talent in his own right, Brian soon joined forces with Slava to become a collaborative art duo called SUPERM. This auspicious conjunction has added new dimensions to their work, including shared drawings, sculptural products, videos, and site-specific installations. While Slava and Brian both pursue their own art careers individually, SUPERM allows them to broaden their palette and produce work that synthesizes their styles and practices: a force to be reckoned with!

New York-based partners-in-art Slava Mogutin and Brian Kenny work separately across various media, as well as collaboratively under the umbrella of SUPERM, a multimedia art team creating site-specific gallery and museum installations worldwide. Mogutin has attracted international attention with his raw and candid urban portraiture documenting various youth subcultures and fetishes, collected in his critically acclaimed monograph Lost Boys (powerHouse Books, NY, 2006), as well as his writings and Russian translations of Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs and Dennis Cooper. In his more recent work Mogutin merges the performance-based practices and event-based art, mapping his work from live event to visual object through photographs that serve as documentation/témoignage. This intersection of exhibitionism/exhibition in turn creates its own series of pairings, joining the intensely personal (orgasm) with the overtly theatrical, the performer with our presence as voyeurs, the artist as (self) recorder and as witness. The sense of trace or residue is not only manifest in the fact of making the images themselves but also in the small details of the performances that they contain: the classic cum shot, a jockstrap left in a sink, bondage gear. In contrast to Mogutin’s photographs, Kenny’s drawings and engravings demonstrate a very distinct stylistic approach. Working in a spontaneous or stream-of-consciousness manner and influenced by the energy and spirit of street art, Kenny layers imagery, deconstructs text and references from pop culture and sports to create a kind of brut expressionist panorama that oscillates between autobiography, social commentary and the absurd. This exhibition explores themes of INTERPENETRATION from multiple perspectives: a physical intersection of separate bodies of work addressing the give-and-take dynamic of Mogutin and Kenny as artists and lovers; as a power exchange of dominance and submission (wrestling, S+M, cock fighting) and the referencing of “cock” as both male organ and bird (according to Mogutin, “cock” (petúkh) is Russian prison slang for “faggot”). Both artists also navigate shifting boundaries of geographical and cultural transplantation. In this sense, INTERPENETRATION addresses the fluidity of identity, where sexual becomes political and vice versa. The title also references Mogutin’s forced emigration from Russia in the wake of two highly publicized obscenity cases, carrying a potential prison sentence of up to seven years. He was granted political asylum in the United States with the support of Amnesty International and PEN American Center.

My installation for the "Boys Toys" exhibition in Warsaw @ Galerie Czulosc was basically a giant collaborative group drawing. I made about 40 'coloring book style' drawings (25 of them made specifically for the exhibition) that were xeroxed en masse and covered the walls of my room with an invitation for the audience to interact by adding their own marks, doodles and drawings to my own. Coloring outside of the lines was encouraged.

The drawings I produced reflect my feelings about 'boys toys'; both the show itself and it's sexual innuendos, as well as my growing fixation with sexual and gender ambiguities, gray areas and variations.

BOYS TOYS is an exhibition by three young, handsome and crazy artists, one of whom lives in Bratislava and two in New York. None of them has shown his work in Poland, which makes this a unique opportunity, especially since most of the works have been created specially for this exhibition.
BOYS TOYS will includes the boys’ cartoon alter egos, who have vivid imaginations and risky adventures. They are complemented by a tasty selection of short video clips and music videos.

Curated by Diego Cortez, this show features large-scale prints and a limited edition box set of 25 prints, 5" x 5" each, edition of 25 copies.

In Slava Mogutin's Suddenly Last Summer, 25 photographic images of male subjects are set in traces of blurred summer color. They are taken with a Holga camera, whose plastic lens delivers the type of experimental accidents for which Jack Smith and Stan Brakhage strove. The resulting light-leaks and double-exposures allow Mogutin a new impressionist vision where a rich and refracted spectrum is layered into the penetrating light of day.

These images are not erotic per se but emotional – an expression of love's natural freedom as opposed to repression's unnatural grip. In perfect contrast to Sebastian's horrifying noonday martyrdom in Williams' Suddenly, Last Summer, Mogutin's subjects live and perform in the open, in brilliant air, in full color and natural light.

Slava Mogutin's luminous pictures celebrate a polychrome Eden that has actually, largely arrived.

Not only are they brave on the roof, but they make a lot of noise in the darkest part of the cellar where even the super hates to go. They also jiggle and hop on the platform between the locked doors of the subway cars.”

I mean (spoiler alert) Samuel dies in the story, but that’s only because some dude pulls the emergency brake– neither here nor there– BUT the point is, Brian is a risk taker...."
